Romero, co-written by John Russo, and starring Duane Jones and Judith O'Dea. The story follows seven people who are trapped in a rural farmhouse in western Pennsylvania, which is under assault by an enlargening group of cannibalistic, undead corpses. The film was completed on a US$114,000 budget and shot outside Pittsburgh, where it had its theatrical premiere on October 1, 1968. Night of the Living Dead has been regarded as a cult classic by film scholars and critics, despite being heavily criticized upon its release for its explicit gore. It eventually garnered critical acclaim and was selected in 1999 by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry as a film deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." The small budget dictated much of the production process. According to Hardman, "We knew that we could not raise enough money to shoot a film on a par with the classic horror films with which we had all grown up. Ben is calm for the most part, calculating and very capable of handling himself and protecting Barbara and the others, in contrast to the portrayal of black characters in the majority of films up until this point in time, which were portrayed as lazy and incompetent; Ben's speech pattern is normal and not exaggerated. There is a perceived racial tension between Harry and Ben since they constantly argue, presumably because Harry views Ben as a threat, only because he is black. The policemen also shoot Ben at the end since they view him as a threat/zombie and not as a normal human being. Some reviewers disliked the film's gory special effects. Variety labeled Night of the Living Dead an "unrelieved orgy of sadism" and questioned the "integrity and social responsibility of its Pittsburgh-based makers".
